TEL AVIV FASHION WEEK

Last month, Tel Aviv had its first fashion week in 30 years and it was worth the wait. Roberto Cavalli showcased his sparkly spring/summer 2012 collection which is a sign of oncoming collaboration between Tel Aviv and Milan. Every season a Milan based designer will show at Tel Aviv as well as the country's new and promising rising stars will showcase their work at Milan Fashion Week. This is a wonderful beginning and only a glimpse of whats more to come. 

This wasn't the first fashion week at Tel Aviv. During the 1970s, there were two a year. Back then though, things were a bit different. There were companies and manufacturers. Now it's more about the talented designers that are emerging. 

The organizer was Ofir Lev, deputy CEO of the Israel Textile and Fashion Association and a former model. He wanted to show that there is fashion and creativity in Israel. He used his contacts and brought together foreign fashion writers to Tel Aviv for the three-day fashion fest. Lev is ready planning another Fashion Week for next April. His intent is to get Israeli-American Elie Tahari as well as Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Italian designer Miuccia Prada and fashion luxury house Dolce & Gabbana on board. Sasson Kedem, a creator of artsy, architecturally styled pieces for women who also served as a mentor on the one season of “ Project Runway Israel,” said the designers that come out of Israel are different and unique. They have to learn how to improvise, they are inspirational, creative and think outside the box. 

International press included England, Russia, Mexico, Italy and the United States. Some of the Israeli designers who made a splash were Dodo Bar Or, Israel Ohayon, Tamar Primark and Mira Zwilinger. Other names include  Ofir Lev, general manager of the Israel Textile and Fashion Association,  Gideon and Karen Oberson, Sasson Kedem, Yaniv Persy, Yosef Peretz, Alembika, Netanel Zikri, Sasson Kedem, Dorin Frankfurt, and Alon Livne of “Project Runway Israel.

Tali Kogan is an Israeli by way of Ukraine who moved to Chicago in 2003 to study business and accounting. "SLEEVIES" PROVIDES MODEST LAYERED LOOK WITH NO SECOND LAYER

 Israel is well known for its innovation in technology and medicine, bit it is now gaining a reputation in the field of fashion as well, particularly styles with a modest look that leaves a little more to the imagination.

One clever item is "Sleevies", which creates a layered look of 3/4 - length tight long sleeves extending from underneath a short-sleeved top. There is actually no garment to which they are attached - just the "Sleevies" which stay in place thanks to a Lycra blend fabric and an elasticized band at the top which hugs the wearer's upper arm firmly yet comfortably. COMFORT AND FASHION IN NEW HOKI SANDALS

Hoki sandals originated 50 years ago, and were thought to have become extinct. Shlomit Slavin, a former advertising executive, rediscovered and modernized Hokis ,which have now become a great fashion success in Paris, Italy, Iceland (yes, Iceland), Greece, and New York.

Hokis are made from recycled plastic, have an orthopedic sole and a natural touch,  and are very comfortable.

Hokis are now manufactured for women and children. Although an old design, they are now made in bright colors and a sophisticated look, and are being sold to high-end fashion stores.

TES BAGS GAIN ATTENTION OF US SHOPPERS

Tali Epstein-Segal was a saleswoman when she decided it was time to try something different. She went to a local leather trader, bought a piece of leather for about $11 and made seven bags.

UNsure of her designs, she took them to a shop in Tel Aviv's trendy Shenkein street to ask for an opinion. They liked the bags and told her to leave them there to see if they might sell. After several weeks, she was surprised to discover that her bags had caused a stir. All of them had sold, and the shop wanted more.

Five years later, Epstein-Segal's bags, sold under the label TES, are now on sale in shops across Israel and the United States. The bags tend to be large handbags and satchels, shough she does make purses and wallets.The bags are simple, strong designs in gorgeous crumpled tan, brown and black leathers, with an occasional flash of vivid color.
